Pop hits from the 1950s and 1960s. Prom dresses. Plenty of jokes and drama. What’s not to love? The Marvelous Wonderettes takes the main stage at Theatre Three in Port Jefferson from February 19-March 26.
First conceived and written by Roger Bean in 1999, this play was originally designed for a black box style performance space. The need for little movement and limited props makes the show more of a character study of the four friends who make up the cast. Referred to as a “jukebox musical,” it feels like a musical review, while still managing to tell a clear and charming plot. Fans of lyrical focused shows like Buddy and Smoky Joe’s Cafe will certainly enjoy this show’s toe tappin’ melodies and nostalgic set list.
The four lead actresses in this show do a wonderful job playing up their character’s quirks, while playing off each other to make the musical performances feel fabulous, flirty, and very funny! Ashley Brooke’s rendition of the flighty and emotional Suzy is both heartwarming and comedic. Kate Keating as Missy was a perfect match, and a great chance for her to show her impressive vocal range. Noelle McLeer showed both her cruel and her tender sides as the queen of the mean girls, which played comically well alongside the bold and brazen Betty Jean, played by Cassidy Rose O’Brien.
Each performer had a chance to spotlight her character using the music to express the varied emotions. I enjoyed the mix of plot and pageantry in this show! I also loved to see the band on stage behind the vocalists; it certainly added to the “prom feel,” and also made the music more of the focus.
While this show may not be everyone’s preferred genre of musical, it’s a great time for anyone who remembers hits like “Lollipop,” “It’s in His Kiss,” and “Respect,” and wants to sing along!
