Babylon, NY (February 27, 2019) –, Long Island’s year-round professional theatrical venue, The Argyle Theatre (Mark and Dylan Perlman, Managing Partners; Evan Pappas, Artistic Director), has announced, today, the line-up for the 2020-2021 Season that includes a world premiere among the list of Broadway favorites to play the The Argyle Theatre (34 West Main Street, Babylon, Long Island).
Launching the Aryle’s third season is the first Mainstage production, the hit musical Mamma Mia (May 14 – June 21, 2020), followed by Footloose (July 9 – August 22, 2020), and the World Premiere of the new musical Punk Rock Girl (September 10 – October 25, 2020). The holiday’s bring Elf The Musical (November 19, 2020 – January 3, 2021), followed by Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story (January 21 – February 28, 2021. Closing out The Argyle Theatre’s 2020-2021 Season is the smash Broadway musical 42nd Street (March 18 – April 25, 2021).

The World Premiere of the new Joe Iconis (Be More Chill) musical Punk Rock Girl will include songs written and made famous by female artists like Pat Benatar, Bikini Kill, Blondie, Echosmith, Avril Lavigne, P!nk, TraLaLa, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The project follows 16-year-old Angelea, struggling to belong and finding her tribe with the help of new friend Proxi and the world of punk music. The title song will be the 1988 track by The Dead Milkmen of the same name. “In punk music, you don’t have to be the most talented musician, the best singer, or the most beautiful rock star,” Iconis said. “The point of punk is that its music for everyone – it’s a party for people who aren’t polished, who aren’t perfect. It’s about finding your passion and not being ashamed of your inner weirdo. This lovingly-trashy show explores serious issues in an occasionally fantastical, often explosive, always heartfelt way.”

Based on the beloved holiday film, this hilarious fish-out-of-water comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity. A title known the world over, Elf The Musical is a holiday musical based on the cherished 2003 New Line Cinema hit, Elf featuring songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar (The Wedding Singer) and Chad Beguelin (Disney’s Aladdin on Broadway), with a book by Tony Award winners, Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone). Buddy, a young orphan, mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. The would-be elf is raised, unaware that he is actually a human until his enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. The Argyle Theatre, the newly renovated and historic theatre on Main Street in the Village of Babylon, NY, opened in Spring, 2018 with the musical Guys and Dolls, the first show in a full roster of plays, musicals, concerts and other performing arts. The theatre will offer six annual main stage productions featuring performers from Actors Equity Association, the union for professional stage actors.
The much-anticipated performance venue has been brought back to life by Mark and Dylan Perlman, a father-son duo behind the $3-million project. Seaford residents Mark Perlman, psychologist, and Dylan Perlman, actor, have long dreamed of bringing high-quality live theatre to Babylon, NY.
The Argyle Theatre has a rich history of entertainment reaching back to 1921 when a newspaper article in the Babylon Leader announced plans for a “$100,000 Theatre for Main Street.” With a 1,500-seat capacity, the new Capitol Theatre was expected to be “the finest theatre on the South Side.” The new entertainment venue would not only benefit residents, it would help Babylon become a more attractive summer resort for vacationers.
A 1923 playbill advertised daily performances ranging from vaudeville to adaptations of Broadway shows such as The Hero and East Side West Side.
In 1925, the Suffolk County theatre re-opened under new ownership as the Babylon Theatre, delighting audiences with its many modern improvements including a flashy electric marquis. An advertising campaign to surrounding communities was so successful that 500 people had to be turned away on opening night. It was obvious that the Babylon Theatre was poised for success.
Throughout the following decades, the Babylon Theatre survived two fires and several different owners as it continued operating as a modern cinema house until 2014.
