The delightful and charming fairytale Rapunzel is now on stage at the John W. Engeman Theater. This newest Children’s Theater production, directed by Jennifer Collester, is sure to bring a smile to the face of all in attendance. Rapunzel is a fast-paced and quick-witted musical boasting amusing antics, funny facial expressions, and silly songs. There’s plenty of giggles involved and not just from the kids. Adults will appreciate the jokes thrown in for their benefit as well, including a very amusing plug for the next Children’s Theater production.
The plot is a slightly toned down version of the original Grimm fairy tale. So while it does open with the witch making a deal with Rapunzel’s parents to trade their baby for a basket of vegetables, later on the prince does not get his eyes poked out by thorns (phew!). He actually ends up with an irremovable darkened pair of eyeglasses which leads to many comical moments. If you have a Tangled lover in your home it might be a good idea to warn them that this is not the Disney version, though they do throw a nod in that direction as Rapunzel is sporting her handy cast iron skillet.
The talented cast of four gives their all with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Rapunzel is sweetly played by the lovely Joanna Sanges, and Christopher Hanford is charming and comical as Prince Brian. Suzanne Mason does a fabulous job as the Witch, and Bobby Montaniz is immediately likeable as the Storyteller/Simon. They all have great voices and put on a very entertaining show.
Head over to the Engeman to watch Rapunzel, where everyone gets a happy ending (even the witch)! Whether the kids in your life are already seasoned theatre goers, or if they’re ready for their first show, Rapunzel is sure to please!
